Job Title: Airline Baggage Handler

Department: Ground Operations

Reports To: Ramp Supervisor/Lead Agent

Job Summary:

The Airline Baggage Handler is responsible for the efficient and safe handling of passenger baggage and cargo within the airport ramp environment. This role ensures timely loading and unloading of aircraft, contributing to on-time departures and arrivals. The Baggage Handler operates in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment and must adhere to strict safety regulations and airline procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Loading and Unloading:
    • Safely load and unload passenger baggage, cargo, and mail onto and from aircraft.
    • Operate baggage carts, conveyor belts, and other ground support equipment.
    • Ensure baggage is handled with care to prevent damage.
    • Accurately sort and route baggage to designated areas.
  • Aircraft Servicing:
    • Assist with aircraft pushback and towing operations as directed.
    • Place and remove wheel chocks and safety cones around aircraft.
    • Assist with aircraft servicing tasks, such as connecting and disconnecting ground power and air conditioning units (if applicable).
  • Safety Compliance:
    • Adhere to all safety regulations and airline procedures.
    • Wear required safety equipment and follow proper lifting techniques.
    • Conduct pre-operational checks of ground support equipment.
    • Report any safety hazards or equipment malfunctions immediately.
  • Teamwork and Communication:
    • Work effectively as part of a team to ensure efficient ramp operations.
    • Communicate effectively with ramp agents, supervisors, and other airport personnel.
    • Follow instructions and respond promptly to radio communications.
  • Time Management:
    • Work efficiently to meet tight deadlines and ensure on-time departures.
    • Prioritize tasks and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment.
    • Maintain a sense of urgency.
  • Other Duties:
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Ramp Supervisor/Lead Agent.
    • Assist with de-icing operations during inclement weather (if applicable).

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience:
    • Previous experience in a physically demanding role is beneficial.
    • Experience in aviation or logistics is a plus.
  • Skills:
    • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 70 lbs) repeatedly.
    • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
    • Strong physical stamina and dexterity.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
    • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
    • Ability to follow instructions and adhere to strict procedures.
    • Valid driver's license.
  • Other Requirements:
    • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain airport security clearance.
    • Must be available to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of heavy objects.
  • Prolonged standing, walking, and bending.
  • Exposure to noise, dust, and varying weather conditions.

Working Conditions:

  • Outdoor ramp environment with exposure to aircraft noise and fumes.
  • Fast-paced and physically demanding work environment.
  • Variable work schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
